MENTOPLASTY
MENTOPLASTY
A well-defined jawline is a fundamental part of a balanced and attractive face for both men and women. Mentoplasty is a surgical procedure that improves the contour of the chin and neck.
CANDIDATES FOR MENTOPLASTY
Patients with small and retruded chins generate an apparent disproportion in relation to the nose. This is usually due to genetic characteristics and can be corrected once maturity is reached in facial development, usually at the end of adolescence.
DETAILS OF DR. PÉREZ'S TECHNIQUE
Typically, Mentoplasty is carried out by inserting a soft Silastic or silicone implant in the chin area. My preference is to perform this procedure through a small incision located in the lower groove of the chin, bordering the neck.
- The implant is inserted into a pocket or space that is designed to fit the size of the implant.
- The implant is inserted into a pocket or space designed to fit the implant. These types of implants can also be placed intraorally, but in my opinion, it can lead to contamination of the prosthesis with saliva and this can later lead to infections or rejection by the body.
- I always recommend the use of anatomical implants that, as the name implies, adapt perfectly to the shape of each patient's chin. These implants have lateral extensions that allow them to be completely camouflaged and not noticeable over time.
ANESTHESIA
If this procedure is performed on its own. I prefer to perform it under local anesthesia and intravenous sedation. Quite often, I perform Mentoplasty together with Rhinoplasty, in order to achieve a more aesthetic and balanced profile.
HOW LONG DOES A CHIN IMPLANT LAST?
It can be said that with the silastic implants we use nowadays, there would really be no need to change them in the long term.
ARE THERE OTHER MENTOPLASTY OPTIONS?
Yes, there are other alternatives that are performed in specific cases. Patients who have very small and retruded chins may require a bone advancement Mentoplasty, i.e. the chin is fractured and brought forward, and fixed in place with titanium plates.
WHAT IS THE RECOVERY LIKE?
Generally, it goes smoothly and does not cause pain or disability. I remove the stitches on the 6th or 7th day.
