For many women who have large and generally sagging breasts, this is a problem that affects their lifestyle, limiting and hindering the performance of certain physical activities, as well as causing discomfort when wearing clothes.

Many of these patients also suffer from certain health problems caused by the excessive weight and size of their breasts, such as chronic head and neck pain, progressive deviations of the spine and skin alterations, such as infections and irritative processes.

DETAILS OF DR PÉREZ'S TECHNIQUE

There are many surgical techniques for breast reduction, and they vary according to different factors that the surgeon must take into account when selecting the technique for each individual case. In general terms, they can be grouped according to the type of incisions used to perform them.

In the great majority of cases Dr. Perez performs the vertical technique since it offers the following advantages:
  • It is performed through a vertical incision that is located directly below the areola, without the need for additional incisions. This incision is as short as possible and generally heals very well.
  • This technique allows a very aesthetic and well projected shape of the breasts, unlike other techniques that tend to leave very flat and shapeless breasts.
In patients with excessively large and sagging breasts, Dr. Perez prefers to perform the breast reduction with an inverted T-shaped technique, in which a vertical and a horizontal incision are made over the breast crease. This is due to the fact that in these cases, there is a greater excess of skin and breast tissue that needs to be removed.

BREAST REDUCTION CANDIDATES

Patients who have one or more of the following characteristics are suitable candidates for this procedure:

  • Large, sagging breasts, disproportionate to the body.
  • Presence of symptoms such as neck pain and headaches as a result of the excessive weight of the breasts.

ANESTHESIA

Breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia and the procedure lasts between 2 to 3 hours.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER SURGERY?

  • Normally there is postoperative swelling during the first 7 days.
  • The permanent use of a postoperative bra is very important, in order to provide comfort and support for the breasts.
  • Strenuous physical activity must be avoided during the first 10 days.

CAN THE BREASTS REGAIN THEIR SIZE?

Once the breast reduction procedure has been performed, the size of the breasts usually remains stable. However, if there are significant increases in body weight or pregnancy, the size and shape of the breasts may change.

IS NIPPLE SENSITIVITY LOST WITH SURGERY?

The breast reduction techniques performed by Dr. Perez allow the maximum preservation of breast sensitivity, since the integrity of the nerves is protected and the function of the nipples is preserved.

IS BREASTFEEDING POSSIBLE AFTER A BREAST REDUCTION?

Breastfeeding after this type of surgery remains intact, since most surgical techniques preserve the integrity of the ducts that carry milk from the mammary gland to the nipple.
